Easy to Knit Baby Cap

Here are the updated instructions for a Knit Baby Cap, perfect for a shower gift made by friend, aunt, expecting mother or grandmother.  Our own rascally bear, Teddy O, is our model today. He thinks the soft yellow enhances his brown eyes and glossy fur, but it also keeps his brains warm. Teddy can be quite the practical bear, you know.  Enjoy!

You'll Need
  • 1 pair size #6 knitting needles
  • Baby sport weight yarn
  • Large eyed needle for sewing the seam
  • Scissors
  • 2" x 4" cardboard for optional pompom

What to Do
(This makes a newborn size cap. Add more stitches and follow basic instructions to make a bigger hat.)

Cast on 68 stitches.
K2, P2 across the row.  Repeat until the piece measures 6 inches long.
K2 together, P2 together across the row, then purl back.
K2 together across the row, then Purl back.  Repeat until nine stitches remain on the needle.
Cut the yarn leaving a 12" tail.  With needle, weave through the nine stitches, pull tight and sew up the seam.
Turn up the cuff of the cap.  Stuff with tissue paper if you’ll be giving the cap as a gift for a fuller presentation.

To make an Optional Pompom
Cut a length of cardboard 2" x 4".
Wrap the yarn round and round the 2" width of the cardboard, on top of itself, until it is about 1/2 inch thick.
With the needle, slide a 10" length of yarn between the cardboard and the yarn.  Gathering the yarn together, tie a knot.  Cut the group of yarn loops directly across from the knot and the cardboard will fall away.
Shake the pompom to fluff it and trim it into a round ball over a trash can.
Tie it securely to the top of the cap with the knot inside the cap.
