Goodbye Lie Diaries- Breelan's 5:01 Club

Fernandina on Amelia Island, Florida
1880s

Breelan Dunnigan
Breelan Dunnigan writes:  Miss Becky's mother broke three toes on her left foot when she dropped a full jar of canned tomatoes on it. Grandmother Peeper has a swelling in her thumb joints.  Mrs. Branson is having severe headaches which Doctor Tackett is unable to remedy and Miss Juniata's sister lost her baby early. Because there has been such illness and sadness in our Aqua Verdi Passenger Line office, I thought it might be a good idea that some of us gather to say prayers, asking God for help. Others must have been feeling the need, too, because anywhere from three to seven of us now meet regularly at one minute after five o'clock, five being the hour when the office is officially closed.  We go into Miss Ella's office and  pull the shades, hold hands and offer up our thanks and praises.  The prayer session lasts only a few minutes, but we all leave to go home and feed our families with smiles on our lips and comfort in our hearts. We have been doing this now for several months and it seems it will become a tradition. Peeper and Aunt Noreen join us, as well.  It is a fine day when the two of them bow their heads side by side.  It pleases me and I hope what we now call our 5:01 Club pleases the Lord.

Jane Marie writes:  What a wonderful idea.  I know several people who may be interested in something like that.  After a hard day of work, be it in an office or outside in the field, saying prayers for needs of family and friends would certainly sooth the people saying them and anyone overhearing. Where there are two or more gathered in His name... Thank you, Bree.

Peeper's New Year's Warning!

Happy New Year!

You may have heard to eat black-eyed peas on January 1st for prosperity in the new year because the peas represent coins. Having pork/ham means a positive advance into the future since pigs eat in a forward movement, not side to side. Consume cornbread to keep your family close in spirit.

*Grandmother Peeper writes in her Goodbye Lie Diary entry, "Don't wash anything on New Year's Day, lest ya wash a family member way!"

No worries here, Peep. We ate canned black-eyed peas.  Apologies to you great Southern home cooks. Add cornbread muffies from Jiffy muffin mix and my personal variation on Reubens- thinly sliced ham instead of corned beef.  While we may have circled these traditions as opposed to enacting them exactly, I promise you, Peeper, I will do no laundry, give the dog a bath or wash a dish today, as per your warning.

Take heed, dear friends.  Peeper has spoken!

(*Peeper adopted the 1880's fictional Dunnigan family in my Amelia Island's Goodbye Lie Trilogy.)

Goodbye Lie Diaries - Jane Marie & Peeper

Fernandina on Amelia Island
Present Day

Jane Marie writes:  I recently heard a name and was reminded of a childhood neighbor. Let's call him Jakie.  He was a year younger than I and would cock his head to the right and squint when he was in the sun.  While that was all understandable, the thing I remember most about him was that he ate worms. I'm serious.  I think he did it to amuse little girls.  I was one of them. I have been accused by a sibling of enjoying a nibble or two of worm myself.  Said sibling was, is and forever will be WRONG.  Jakie ate them, not me!  You'd think I would remember such a revolting thing, wouldn't you?

As the years advanced, our daughter, Barbra, told us her first grade boyfriend, Randy Snort, liked to lick rocks.  If this is a generational thing, and we continue to be fascinated by such oddities, I wonder if granddaughter Ava's first boyfriend will chew his own toenails. It could happen.

1880s
Fernandina on Amelia Island, Florida

Grandmother Peeper writes:  I've had many a ree-quest fer my egg pies. Mix eggs, nacherly, milk, cheese and ham. Bake  'um half the hour in a medium hot oven lessen you git a burnt crust.  Breakfast, dinner and supper, any time is the right time ta be served a wedge.  Add some a the fruit a the season ifn' ya don't have a hateful Aunt Noreena around who is worse at stealing your crops than them rabbits from the woods. Eat hearty!

Jane Marie writes:
Peeper, your egg pie sounds delightful so, with your permission, I'll have you serve it to your Dunnigan family in Mark of a Man, my next novel, set in your 1898 time.

I make something similar.  Below is my version  we call quiche.

You will need:
2 frozen regular pie shells
6 eggs
1 cup light sour cream
8 ounces 2% sharp cheddar cheese
2 think slices of lean ham, chopped
1/4 cup no fat milk
green onions, chopped, optional

Spice for first pie:
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, more or less, depending upon how strong you like your garlic

Spice for second pie:
1 small can green chillies

Poke each shell all over with a fork so it won't puff up during pre-baking for 10 minutes at 400 degrees. Let cool while mixing filling.

Pie Filling:
Beat eggs, sour cream, cheese, milk, and ham together.  Separate evenly into two separate bowls. To the first bowl, stir in the garlic powder.  To the second, stir in the green chilies. Fill cooled pie shells with mixtures and bake for 45 to 50 minutes at 325 degrees until knife inserted in the center comes out clean. It may be necessary to cover edge of crust with aluminum foil to prevent browning too much.  Serve warm and refrigerate leftovers.  Reheat for moments in the microwave to avoid a soggy crust.

Goodbye Lie Diaries - Another Peeperism

1880s
Fernandina on Amelia Island, Florida

Grandmother Peeper
Grandmother Peeper, player in Amelia Island's GOODBYE LIE Triology writes:

If'n you are one a them folks who's so pig headed, ya won't change your ways fer nothin' or ya always dun somethin' one way and, by wingle, you won't never do it no other way, well, my friend, you are what I call a rut-stucker.  Yes, sir. Yes, ma'am. You are stuck in a rut. Ain't nothing' ta be proud of. Don't be like that Aunt Noreen.  Why Noreena is such a rut-stucker, she still wears that same smelly perfume which I'm aguessin' she must make herself out in the barn cause it smells like...like what she finds in the barn. How poor Clabe ever got close enough ta her ta produce two children is beyond my knowin'. That man must have a stopped up smeller, is all I kin think. So Noreena is a rut-stucker fer certain!  And who ever wants ta be like her is crazy. So just don't be.

Eat a green apple and your blood will stay sweet.
