Grammy Camp - Perfume People + Goodbye Lie Diaries - Marie

Granddaughter Ava and I planned on making Perfume People last summer at our annual Grammy Camp, that's when I first thought of the idea, but just ran out of time.  This year, we made sure to do this fun project and you can see the results.

Ava's Bing-Bong

Some empty, fancy perfume bottles and scraps of ribbon, lace and netting, plus markers, buttons, rhinestone jewels, hot glue* and whatever is in your stash of craft goodies and you and yours can make your own Perfume People.  No two will ever be alike, either! Create a create family, a theme, create a holiday scene. Enjoy!

*Always keep a cup of water beside you when you work with hot glue.  Should you burn yourself on the glue, and it happens, quickly dip your finger into the water and it will stop the hurt.

delightful!  I can entertain the children for hours making these.  I will put forth the word immediately that all the women we know should save their empty perfume bottles. Between Breelan, Carolena, Nora, Sophie Belle, our mother, Miss Ella, and the girls in our Aqua Verde office, we should have enough in no time.  And with all the sewing and mending that goes on around Dunnigan Manor, there will be enough ribbons and so forth that the little ones won't fight.  I don't know what your hot glue is but it sounds dangerous.  We will use our usual paste and, hopefully, get the same wonderful results. I can't wait to tell everyone about the new friends, Perfume People, they are about to meet.

(Marie Dunnigan is a featured player in Amelia Island's Mark of a Man, part of the Goodbye Lie Trilogy, set on Amelia Island, Florida in 1898.)

Goodbye Lie Diaries- Miss Ella and Spring

Fernandina on Amelia Island, Florida
Late 1800s

Miss Ella
Miss Ella writes:  I so love spring.  The windows are open and the curtains are dancing.  The birds are happy, too, and singing so loudly outside my office, they are distracting me from my ciphering.  The proof of that is I’m writing in my diary.  I think Aqua Verdi Passenger Line will survive while I  take I few minutes to myself.  I can see the daffodils out by the Talkin’ Tree.  I love bulbs.  One day there is nothing and the next time you look, there they are, their pretty flower faces seemingly looking right at you.  I don’t know if my girls will find as much pleasure as I do gardening.   When they were children, we planted pansies together on either side of the front steps. As they are getting older, they are so busy, Breelan with her writing, Carolina with her designs and Marie—I don’t know what Marie is busy with, now that I think on it.  She is very often with Sophie Belle and I’m afraid the two of them might get into trouble the way Breelan and Nora did. Well, more Breelan, really.  Nora always seems to land on her feet. In spite of her mother, she is such a lovely young lady.   Sorry Lord, it is not for me to judge, but You have Your hands full with Aunt Noreen alone!  Bless her heart.

Here is a photograph of my daffodil, Miss Ella.
I suspect it looks very much like yours!

The Goodbye Lie Diaries are communications between the fictional Dunnigan characters from historic suspense Goodbye Lie series set in the 1880s and present day.  We share the same Amelia Island, Florida, same town of Fernandina, same Atlantic Ocean, same Amelia River, same weather, same growing conditions, same buildings on downtown Centre Street, well over 100 years apart ... jmm

Goodbye Lie Diaries - Peeper vs Aunt Noreen

Fernandina on Amelia Island, Florida
1880s

Grandmother Peeper
Peeper writes:  Do ya  got a problem with them pesky crickets a chirpin' and keepin' ya up most a the night?  Take a banana peel or two, chop  'um up and scatter 'um outside near the doors and winders. Don't know if them crickets is quiet cause they're eatin' the peels or cause they don't like the smell.  Now, I ain't never tried this myself.   Ifn it don't work, blame Aunt Noreen!

Aunt Noreen
Aunt Noreen writes:  Peeper Clegg!  How dare you go telling Jane Marie's friends I peel bananas to feed crickets! You have your stories mixed up, again.  Mrs. Ickles  is the one who feeds the crickets. Everybody knows I can't endure the feel of banana peels on my fingers.  My Clabe peels and slices my bananas for me to eat only, because he adores me so.  Besides, cotton in my ears works just as well at blocking out pesky cricket noises and bothersome old pickle-plumpers like you!  Don't be using my name again unless it is in an honorable way.

Peeper writes:  All I know is that you're the craziest old chicken I ever seen.  I cain't understand how you're aunt to my Breelan and Carolena and Marie and Jack Patrick. Theys all got sense.  Somebody must a banged your head on the door jam when you was a baby, is what I say.

***Peeper and Aunt Noreen and all mentioned in the above diary entry are neighbors in Jane Marie Malcolm's The Goodbye Lie historical suspense novels set on Amelia Island.

Goodbye Lie Diaries - Marie Dunnigan

1880s
Fernandina, Florida

Marie writes:  We do not have any sort of holiday honoring our fathers or mothers in my time, Jane Marie, but we should.  It is a grand idea.  I have three things to share about my wonderful father, Michael Dunnigan.

1. Since I am the youngest sibling of four in our family, I was the last one to ride in the chair swing he made for us that still hangs in our barn so we could play even when it rained. I think you mention it in The Goodbye Lie. Now Daddy's grandchildren take turns on it.

2. Daddy didn't laugh at me like Pat and Micky and Warren Lowell did when I tried playing the violin.

3. Daddy saved a baby mouse from being eaten by our cat and he let me keep it!  Mama was not happy, but Peeper did not complain because it kept Aunt Noreen from visiting all summer until it escaped.  That kept her away until Thanksgiving!
